Did you know that the lifetime prevalence of common low back pain is about at 60% to 70%?

Low back pain is also the leading cause of activity limitation and work absence throughout much of the world.

What could be causing your back pain?

In simple terms, when a patient feels low back pain, it’s usually non-specific low back pain, which is generally biomechanical in origin. This basically means the problem may be coming from a joint, muscle or ligament. In less than 2% of the population the back pain may be originating from something serious which is why a thorough history and physical examination is important.

Thankfully, for some, their back pain may go away on its own over time, however for others it may need more work, such as getting some form of treatment, or loading the body a certain way.

Taking on too much load – whether it be at the gym, relationships or work – can create a cycle of dysfunction, poor recovery and long-term injury.

How is it treated?

The underlying causes of lower back pain are rarely tackled and are usually treated with analgesics and rest. Nowadays there has been a shift towards physical, hands-on treatment from health professionals such as Chiropractors and Physiotherapists. Evidence suggests that intensive rehabilitation can be more effective than surgery, especially in the long run.

Conservative care from a Chiropractor will almost always include spinal manipulation. This form of therapy focuses on getting joints moving better. The joints are released to improve range of motion and flexibility. This release is commonly associated with a “crack”, and signifies gas leaving a joint. This frees up range of motion and aids in treatment by desensitising the patient to pain.

Luckily, most cases of acute back pain usually improve on its own, but it can take a long time and pain typically comes back… Evidence has shown faster recovery periods when the rehabilitation is undertaken and biomechanical dysfunctions are addressed.

What does rehab involve?

When you see one of our Chiropractors, the initial process will encompass a variety of physical assessments to test your strengths and weaknesses. Here at BOLT Chiropractic, the Chiropractors will assign you personalised exercises to improve your rehabilitation time and build long term resilience to injury. During rehab, passive treatment is incorporated to aid in pain relief.

Treatment and rehabilitation generally include Chiropractic adjustments , soft tissue therapy and trigger point therapy, dry-needling, and exercises and stretches depending on the injury itself. Our focus will be based on the goals of our patients. Our treatment is designed to give pain relief to promote an easier and faster rehab period.

Tips to help with back pain…

The prognosis – or predicted outcome – of an injury is drastically improved when the patient looks after their sleep and mental health. Eating healthy, keeping hydrated, meditating and reducing work stress is vital aiding your rehabilitation journey.

There may be many things contributing to your back pain, but being more active will almost always help. A small tip is to explore all ranges of motion and to not maintain the same posture for too long. The spinal column is a very strong structure and is designed to move, stretch and lift even heavy objects.

It is crucial to stand up and take regular breaks at work or whilst studying. This can include hamstring or glute stretches, going for a small walk or jog, or flexing and extending your whole spine. We always recommend doing 2-3 sets of your favourite movements or exercises.

How to prevent low back pain?

After the acute stages of your rehabilitation program, our Chiropractors will encourage movement, that may be at a gym or even a pilates studio. Exercising appropriately will lower your risk of re-injury. Conditioning your muscles and strengthening your bones, makes your body more equipped to handle the physical stresses of daily life and reduces the likelihood of osteoporotic fractures. Dieting correctly and performing weight-bearing exercise, is something we strongly urge for every age group, shape or size.

Here at BOLT Chiropractic, we have a fully equipped gym next door to take patients through correct form and the necessary advice on working out.
